How It Works

Your pool pump needs to run long enough to turn over (filter) all the water at least once per day — ideally 1.5 to 2 times. For a 15,000-gallon pool with a 40 GPM pump, one turnover takes about 6.25 hours. Running the pump for 8-10 hours per day is typical. With a single-speed pump, this is the most expensive way to operate — running at full speed all the time. A variable-speed pump can run at lower RPM for longer periods, moving the same volume of water while using 60-75% less electricity. The energy savings often pay for the pump upgrade within 2-3 years. Run the pump during the hottest hours of the day when algae growth is most active.
