How It Works
Saltwater pools use a salt chlorine generator (SCG) that converts dissolved salt into chlorine through electrolysis. Most generators need salt levels between 2700 and 3400 ppm to operate efficiently. The ideal range is typically 3200 ppm. Use only pool-grade salt (NaCl 99.8% pure or higher) — never use rock salt, which contains impurities that can stain your pool. Salt does not evaporate, so you only need to add more when you drain water, get heavy rain, or splash out a lot. Test salt levels monthly with test strips or a digital meter.
